Auto Oil Filters
Something that not nearly enough auto owners ask themselves on a regular basis is, “am I doing enough to keep my vehicle’s engine in top form?” It’s something that occurs to most car owners from time to time, but which few actually end up taking action on. Whether or not you are doing enough to take care of your engine in particular, the simple fact of the matter is that by paying close attention to such matters as the kind of engine oil you use, how long it has been inside the engine, and what sort of an oil filter you use (and, again, how long it’s been in place), you can do a tremendous amount of good for your car as a whole. In fact, engine oils and auto oil filters are not only incredible important, they’re remarkable cheap as well—and therefore represent just the sort of the thing the typical car owner will want to keep a close eye on and regulate properly.
There are, nonetheless, a good deal of myths and rumors out there, spreading among car owners like a nasty winter flu, leading people in the wrong direction with regards to oils and auto oil filters in general: what kinds are the best, the effects of using one over the other, and so on and so forth. While some myths are fairly innocuous and merely lead a car owner to use a type of oil or filter that is much more advanced or efficient than their engine requires (and therefore which presents no benefits whatsoever), other myths may actually end up leading to serious damage to your vehicle. Take, for example, the worst myth this author has ever heard of, which is that it’s a good idea to simply not use any kind of oil filter at all because it reduces both oil and air flow inside the engine—following this advice could wind your vehicle up in the auto-graveyard way earlier than you had expected!
First of all, no matter what the pros or the wannabes tell you about switching to this or that model, know that there is hardly ever going to be a better filter to use than the one recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer. Auto oil filters of a different make may not be of the right dimensions to fit properly in your engine and furthermore they may lead to either too much or too little filtration for the level of performance of your car. Hence, to stay safe, just stick with the auto oil filters the manufacturer tells you to use!
With that said, there are some incredible innovations that have really brought the level of performance of auto oil filters way up over the last few years. Chiefly, such improvements as including particle-attracting magnets along the canal of the oil inside the filter and the inclusion of synthetic fibers in auto oil filters which improve the capturing abilities of the paper fibers. If your manufacturer does not recommend a filter that includes these capabilities and you find one that fits nice and snug in the housing, then you might want to go ahead and use it anyway—check with an expert beforehand, however, to make sure no problems will arise.
