Now that you have a reason why, let’s provide the how. So, how do I make changes that my adolescent will adhere to? First show the consequence of such behavior; shrinking! Show the cosmetic deformity to a young woman and she will pay attention. Here’s what to do. Alternate! On the way to school, position the backpack on the back and on the way home from school, position the backpack across the chest. Second option: on the way to school, place the backpack over the left shoulder and on the way home from school, position the backpack over the right shoulder. Third option: carry 2 smaller bags that equally distribute the weight, one in the left hand and one in the right. Lastly, rotate between all three options – mood dependent.
Although each scenario is ideal, an already distorted posture is a risk that requires professional assessment. Here’s a simple way to identify a change in your child’s spine. Observe posture. If a deviation isn’t obvious, then advance the test. Verbal instruction: 1. Close eyes, 2. Shake your body, 3. Stop, and 4. Show me a perfect posture.
If a line were drawn from a point between your eyes down to a point between your ankles, it would be perfectly straight up-and-down. In addition, your shoulders, hips, and knees would be of equal height. Bottom line: posture matters and now you’re equipped to evaluate and potentially save a spine. Wow, how exciting!
