Bad Boss Behavior
Do you love your job but hate your boss?
It is amazing just how much of an influence your boss has on your attitude and feelings towards your job and by boss I mean anyone in a supervisory position. Bosses can all display types of behaviour that can make your job a living hell or make you stay longer than is good for your career. I know people who have stayed with the same manager for 8 or more years and not advanced their career just because they like their boss professionally and personally. On the other hand I know people who would rather be without a job than stay in their current job with their “bad boss”.
SO WHAT DOES MAKES A BOSS BAD?
Examples of bad boss behavior:
Showing favoritism – nothing screams bad management more than managers who loves brown nosers, tattle tails and openly shows favouritism.
Using inappropriate disciplinary measures- this shows when a manager is not in control. They use over the top disciplinary action to try and show who is boss. However this produces an uncertainty in staff as they see the manager as irrational and unstable.
Quick to blame – how many managers are quick to point the finger when something goes wrong instead of helping to fix it or before looking into what actually went wrong.
Always right – no matter what happens this boss is always right and will not listen to anything that a subordinate tells them and they can’t take constructive criticism.
These are just a brief example of the many different types of bad boss behaviour that managers can display and can build up on one another to seem like one long series of demotivating and degrading behaviour. We all know demotivated staff are not productive staff.
Don’t forget that your fate is intimately associated to the fate of your boss even if you consider your boss to be bad you need to know how to make the best of a situation as this can affect not just your career advancement but your salary and your mental well being until you can get a new boss
HERE ARE A FEW TIPS OF HOW TO DEAL WITH THAT BAD BOSS:
First of all if you are a hard worker who works with discipline and focus and produces results whether your boss is good or bad this will hold you in good stead to find another position with a manager with a management style that suits you better.
Show an interest in the tasks and goals your manager has to achieve. If they are asking you for a report with short notice it may be because they have just been told by their boss that they are giving a presentation on Monday. There is almost always a reason why your boss asks you to do something. If you can help them achieve their targets they are more likely to look upon you favourably, plus you might even learn something new!
In interviews very few people ask about the management style of their boss to be. This is a huge error on the part of the interviewee. The job itself could be a perfect fit for you but if the manager has a style that is in conflict with the way you work it can make the perfect job the perfect nightmare.
Ask yourself what makes your boss a bad boss. Make sure you take notes and analyze these things to make sure you do not display the same behaviour and become a bad boss yourself.
Sometimes a bad boss can be a good thing. I know it sounds strange but having a bad boss can be the motivation you need to look for a new job or new opportunities. When this happens network, network, network! Use your friends and contacts to help you get a new job.
