Jimi Hendrix pedals/effects?

I’m going to try to cover my favorite Hendrix songs during the summer and I would like to know which effects I need to get close to his sound. The song are: Machine Gun, Easy Blues, Villanova Junction, Voodoo CHILE (not voodoo child/slight return) blues, Catfish blues, Who Knows, Power to/of Love. Please list all of the effects I need, to cover ALL of the above songs.
Also: please give me names of certain products (like: You need a Jim Dunlop Fuzz Face w/ germanium circuitry or something), not just what type of effect I need (like: you need a wah dude.).
I am using a Blues Junior III amp and a Jimmie Vaughan signature strat if anyone wants to know.
Thank you very much!

Hello there,

Dude you need a wah pedal! Well for me that says it all. There really is only one wah pedal, the Dunlap Crybaby. And yes, the Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face. In the early days Jimi used a different fuzz box. There were not a lot of choices in 67. I forget who make the old fuzz box we all used back then. But it does not really matter, you cannot find those any more. The Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face Jimi used later on. The Fuzz Face and Cry Baby tandem is essential. Here is a tidbit I saw once that shows the importance. Michael Bloomfield, who once stated that Hendrix gave him a big lecture about the Fuzz Face and the CryBaby being the only ones that really worked. “He said the CryBaby gave the biggest range from treble to bass, and it had the hugest wah effect, the fastest action, and the most authentic vocal sound,” remembered Bloomfield. “The Fuzz Face was the most distorted sounding of such units, and the two plugged together created permanent sustain and endless distortion.

I got that bit from Bloomfield here

You need an octave pedal. Jimi used a Roger Mayer built Octavia. Those are not cheap. I have tried some cheap octave pedals and none sound like the Mayer. I cannot recommend a cheaper substitute because I have not found one yet.

There was a thing about Jimi’s guitars that many folks overlook when trying to recreate his sound. Don’t know how much detail you want to go into. Jimi flipped a right handed guitar around to play left handed. He did switch the strings around but he did not alter the pickups. The 60s Strats had staggered poles so the point height is different on Jimi’s guitars. For example the pole that had been under the B string was now under Jimi’s A string. Also the slant of the bridge pickup is backwards. Jimi was aware of these things and liked how they sounded. You seldom hear folks mention those details.

You have a great gear rig. I don’t know if the Blues Jr will run out of head room trying to handle the gain and distortion. By the way, Jimi played with his amp controls just about flat out open. He wore the tubes out.

Anyway, back to your question. Dude you need a wah and a fuzz.

Later,

Hello again,

I saw this supposed gear set for Jimi some time ago and saved the link. Here it is.

http://www.online-discussion.com/JimiHendrix/viewtopic.php?p=3030&sid=62432765a0556e95eca133d501a21003

Frankly I have no idea what time period that is supposed to be from. As I recall after Jimi dumped the Sunn cabs, he pretty much went from one Marshall head with 2 4x12s to 3 Marshall heads with 6 4x12s. Also the Vox wah does not set with what I remember. So I have some doubts about this supposed gear rig. But consider it for yourself. (I think this was what was written as his Woodstock set up).

Last thing, Jimi did this thing with his strings. He moved them around so the gauges were mixed (from what we consider in a set). He did that intentionally. On that link where Bloomfield talks about the wah and fuzz, there is a pretty good explanation about Jimi’s string set up.
