Bearings make it possible for bullet trains to exist

The American Bearing Manufacturers’ Association is an organization of manufacturers of linear bearings, taper bearings, roller bearings or ball bearings, among others. The ABMA has been in existence for more than half a century, and, in April of 2011, took the time to recognize those bearing manufacturers that have been members of the Association for the past seventy five years.

All of the companies selected for this award deserved to be recognized not only for their outstanding longstanding membership in the ABMA, but for their impact on the bearings industry. All of them are leaders in their field, and their developments in the science of friction management have made new manufacturing, automotive, and military technologies possible. Without their bearings, the bullet train couldn’t exist, nor could a number of car safety features. Many components of wind turbines and solar arrays depend on ball bearings, roller bearings, or other types of bearings to perform, making these manufacturers vital contributors to the energy revolution. Bearings are a necessary way to avoid friction and resistance between moving parts in a machine, and it is only through the advancements made by  bearings manufacturers that industry has been able to come as far as it has.

Seven companies were recognized for their loyalty to the ABMA at the Association’s meeting this past April. NSK corporation, proud makers of NSK bearings, was recognized. Alongside them were American Taper Roller Bearing Company, Emerson Transmission, NTN Bearing Corporation of America (the makers of NTN bearings), SKF USA Incorporated (manufacturers of SKF bearings), The Timken Company (makers of Timken bearings), and The Schaeffler Group (makers of FAG bearings). All of these companies have been in business for almost a century, and all of them have had a profound impact on all facets of the design, manufacturing, and use of bearings. Whether their products are used in car engines or military planes, the care and devotion they put into producing their linear, roller, and ball bearings, bearing houses, and lubricants is evident.

The American Bearing Manufacturers’ Association is one of the first groups of its kind created to support manufacturers of bearings. With the devotion of the ABMA, American bearings manufacturers are able to continue to produce high quality bearings, and further the development of the automotive, aerospace, railway, military, and manufacturing industries. Going forward, the ABMA plans to recognize other loyal members of the organization, with awards for twenty five and fifty years of membership.
