Residential Carpet – Guide To The Different Styles
Most people will have a carpet installed in their home at some time or another and unless you have been involved in carpet industry, you will be virtually clueless as to what type of carpet you should use. In fact your knowledge on carpets will be practically nil so an uphill battle begins as you try to make a decision.
The first two questions most people think of when searching for residential carpet are: price and colors. The short answer is that you can find carpets in just about any color and a wide variety of prices.
The major difference between a residential carpet and a commercial carpet is that traffic levels will be very different. In a home traffic will be limited to family and occasionally friends. Traffic is therefore sporadic as we do spend much of our times away from the home. Commercial traffic on the other hand is much heavier as both the number of people is greater and it is much more continuous.
The effect of these traffic differences is that a residential carpet will be softer and with longer carpet tile although it may easily weigh more.
There are different types of residential carpet. These difference will have to do with variations in construction that produce carpets that will vary in yarn weight, in texture and in style.
Before looking at types of residential carpet a very quick look at carpet rolls and carpet tile squares. Carpet rolls are typically 13’6″ width althogh there are variations depending on the machine width and number of needles. Carpet tile squares on the other hand are 18″ x 18″ and up to 36″ x 36″.
Types of Residential Carpet.
Most carpet roles are manufactured using the tufted method. In simple terms a needle, pulling a yarn, is inserted through what is known as primary banking. As the needle begins to retract the yarn is held back by a looper. When a cutting knife is applied to this loop, cut pile carpet is made. if the knife is not attached, loop pile carpet is the result.
Cut Pile : Velvet, Saxony, shag, plush, and frieze. These styles are defined by the length of the yarn, the amount of twist in the yarn, the thickness of the yarn.
Loop Pile: For residential use Berbers, with their construction variations, are the choices. A Berber carpet is a type of loop pile carpet, but where the yarn is much thicker. These have been designed as residential carpet is therefore not recommended for commercial use.
Level Loop – The type of construction for Berbers can be level loop, whether loops are all the same size. Typically commercial carpet will be level loop, but for residentials yarn thickness will be the difference.
Textured Loop, which will have slight differences in height which produce different patterns.
Multilevel Loop – as the name implies loops will be made at different heights, and much more than textured loop.
Cut piles have been for many years the classical residential carpet but over the last decade or so Berbers have been gaining much more ground and one of the reasons for this is that there usually is a price difference. Cut pile carpets will need an extra stage in the yarn preparation which is adding twist. Loop pile will not normally use yarns that have this twist. The major difference will be the yarn cost.
