Using Plug-ins For Audio Mastering
Mastering is the final process before replication, a single musical piece sounds more spacious, more defined, nicely balanced, and overall, louder and punchier after mastering.
An album, after mastering, sounds like a unified collection of songs that belong together in volume and tone in addition to the fact that each song has the characteristics mentioned above.
Professional Mastering studios use both analog mastering gear and digital hardware and software (plug-in) processors. Analog mastering gear play an important role in achieving a full, warm and punchy master, but unless you are a professional mastering engineer or have a lot of money, you won’t be able to use them, they are expensive!
Many musicians record and mix their own music on their personal computers and probably want to master their own music as well, but with plug-ins, mastering is not as easy as mixing.
One of the main reasons is that you can’t achieve a loud master without distortion or loosing the punch. As you know Analog gear have considerably more headroom for processing compared to plug-ins or digital processors in general. And another reason is that everyone expects their music to get to the next level after mastering not only being louder.
A punchier, fuller, more defined, more spacious master is what everyone looks for. Do the plug-ins go that far, or would you rather give up and say: I don’t have the proper gear, that’s why I can’t do the mastering myself!
These are the six most important stages of mastering:
- Equalization
- Multi-band dynamics processing
- Compression & parallel compression
- Stereo enhancement
- Adding mastering reverb
- Level maximization
This is an example of a mastering chain (you can use a different sequence according to your needs):
EQs (Cut) > Multiband Dynamics > Compressors > Stereo image widening > EQs (Boost) > Mastering reverb & Parallel compression > Limiter (Final stage of level maximization).
