Childrens Pedal Cars-A Favourite Toy From The 1890s To 2010
There are certain toys that stand the test of time in our childhood memories and childrens pedal cars are one of these. When we are children we want to be grown up and a classic pedal car is the closest we will get to a grown up car for many years to come. Even nowadays when a child’s life can be so computerised the thrill of a pedal car is one sure way to get your child moving around and ignoring TV screens, computers and computer games.
Children’s pedal cars actually appeared not long after the adult automobile came into being. Back in the 1890s replicas of the cars of that day were fashioned into childrens pedal cars. These were only attainable for the children of wealthy families, in those times.
Quite a bit of metal went into the manufacturing of these cars and after the 1930s the production died down and was non-existent during World War 2 as the materials had to be dedicated to the war efforts. Once the war was over chain driven pedal cars became available in a lot of the bigger shops.
The style of these kids’ cars copied whatever the trends of the adult automobile industry of that time dictated. There was fine attention to detail and features included real chrome, custom paint, working horns and lights, plus windows that moved. Metal was the original material but later on plastic became more common. Car models reflected exact models including the year of the model.
The popularity of these once marvellous items decreased as they became manufactured from plastic. However nowadays there are metal ones available as well as kits for enthusiasts who wish to recreate a model as close as possible to some of the original antiques which have become much sought after collector’s items.
Collectors enjoy them for their beauty, the emotions that they stir as well as for their financial value. Today’s models which are enjoying a revival are the likes of the red fire engine pedal car and the pink princess pedal car. It could be said that in addition to the thrill of a young child having their own car they now include the potential for role play.
If considering buying one for your child do check that it has been finished off with lead free power coat paint finish. These toys are normally suitable for ages one to five years old. Although the metal cars are not a cheap present for your child their benefits outweigh their price tag. As a parent you know that a percentage of the toys and presents a child gets are soon ignored once the novelty value has worn off. Childrens pedal cars will normally be a favourite with most children.
