Mzone Report: Near the Money Aggression

One of my forum members and video subscribers came up with this question and even though I have addressed it before it certainly is a topic worth getting deeper in thought. Here is the question:

“I have watched your videos Marty and I actually have a list of your key points that I read through at the beginning of every tournament and sometimes during as well. I am constantly telling myself MAKE THE MONEY but yet, when it’s getting close to the bubble I start becoming more aggressive and half the time end up busting out when I could of easily (or barely sometimes) make it to the money. I know you talked about how making the money is vital when you are starting out but once you have an established bankroll this might change. How can I work on convincing myself that while aggressive play is best if you have the money to do it, while I’m building my bankroll it is not what I want to be doing?”

Ok fair point here and I agree it’s a difficult concept to grasp, but I would like to reiterate here that in entry level tournament play your most profitable strategy will be super tight, even NEAR THE MONEY. Essentially you shouldn’t be playing hands (while establishing your bankroll) where you are NOT the favorite. Being a clear favorite is even better when NEAR THE MONEY. I have several reasons for this, so hear me out.

1- In a higher buy-in situation your aggressiveness will have impact, but not in the tournaments (you should) be playing while building. Namely the $1 to $10 multi table tournaments. As many tournament indicator forum members will agree with me here, your aggressiveness will often be matched with utter stupidity and while you can have a strong hand in such a situation, it’s usually the marginal leads that fall and send you sinking into the tilt zone.

2- You may very well be cutting your own legs at this stage because it is volatile for a reason – that being many opponents with orange and red mzone stacks are not in the least bit interested in making the money and for scoring 3, 5, 8 or 10 bucks for their account. Although that attitude is sound mathematical advice for serious money tournaments, I have never found it profitable competing with a table of brain-deads.

3- Every time you bust out due to over aggressiveness NEAR THE MONEY there is at least a 20% chance that you would have encountered significantly better opportunities (AA, AK, KK, QQ etc.) just a hand or two later that would have doubled you up. Add that to your ITM money finishes and all of a sudden you are ITM 15% to 20% of the time. Calculate a fraction of those times into final table and top 3 finishes and then you start to see how a bankroll building process really works.

4- Staying extra tight aggressive at this stage will also give you more quality time in a tournament that translates directly into experience which you can refer to over and over again. Let’s face it, the nitty-gritty and tough decisions of tournament play starts NEAR THE MONEY, so why be willing to bow out there in a marginal situation? Here is where you get to see the quality players making good decisions and taking advantage of others mistakes.

5- Finally, inching up your poker bankroll is infinitely better than reloading. If you can learn to manage your own emotions, improve your decisions, and tame the monkeys while playing low buy in online tournaments you are absolutely setting yourself up for bigger, more profitable tournaments. Use your initial deposit as a learning grace period for yourself. If you have to reload that’s fine, but don’t reload because of over aggressiveness NEAR THE MONEY.
