Which Synth Should I Get?
I am looking to upgrade from my cheesy as keyboard/synth and explore more
I want a synth that can be versatile enough to do anything from mgmt’s psychadelic sounds to passion pit’s sounds to owl city’s mellow and smooth sounds
i’d prefer analog and under 1k
suggestions on what to get?
i’ve been looking at microKorg’s and Dave Smith Mopho’s,
but i would love some more suggestions on what would fit what im looking for
thanks!
You should have a look at the Roland XV-5050. It’s the best and most versatile synth I’ve ever used. It has almost limitless sound creation potential. Everything and anything you could possibly want to do sound-wise can be done on this bit of kit. They’re discontinued now, but it’s easy enough to pick one up online and you could get one for well under a grand. It is a synth module though, so you would have to pick up a MIDI controller too, but you can do that cheaply enough these days.
There’s tons of soft synths and VST’s that you can pick up for next to nothing or even completely free these days. They’re much cheaper than hardware synths and are really worth looking into. You would need to pick up a MIDI controller to operate them properly too, but again, that’s a minimal expense. Two I would really suggest downloading are Protoplasm and Crystal.

If you have any music production software, you might as well download these and give them a try for nothing. You can even just use a mouse to control the onboard keyboards to see what they sound like. Just add them to your VST instruments folder.
I’ve made whole tracks using nothing but these two pieces of software. They really are that versatile.
