Mixing your beats… Using E.Q Techniques
You’ve got that hot track worked up, it’s sounding good, you’re loving the groove but now you have to take it to the next level… You have to mix it out. This is where many beat makers fall short and prove themselves to be armature producers. However, don’t be lazy. Few know that with a little research, you can turn your dull, lifeless tracks into dynamic, stereo, premium quality music. The beat it self is only half the battle. If the quality aint right, it aint tight. Period.
So, many will tell you that much of the mixing in music production has to do with E.Q. more so than levels. E.Q. deals with the different frequencies of a sound. When you are mixing many different sounds together, you have to be sure that the frequencies do not clash or it just wont sound right. Have you ever laid down a bass drum then put maybe a bass guitar over it and you get that horrible conflicting rubble every time the bass drum and the bass guitar hit at the same time? Those are colliding frequencies. The bass drum and the bass guitar are both using up the low frequency range and it is not enough room for the both of them. They have to fit in the same space without touching and colliding with each other. Many professional mixers will say that once you get your low end frequencies right, you are already halfway finished with your mixing job.
The other part of mixing comes from imagery. That’s right! Stereo imagery. The human ear can perceive just about any direction sound is coming from. So think of your mixes like a 3D image instead of a flat canvas. Professional mixers will tell you to think of your beats like you think of a band performing on a stage. The drummer is going to be in the middle, The guitarist to either side, the piano to another side, etc. This is where panning, reverb, and delay come in. You want to actually create a stereo image. Meaning, you want to fabricate where the drums are located in your track, where the guitar is located in your track, where the synths and strings are located in your track. You are actually painting a 3D image when you are mixing your music. Some items are closer than others, some to the left some to the right and some far in the back. It’s up to you and how you ultimately want your music to sound.
The key here is that music requires a certain amount of separation to sound clean. You don’t see a band playing all bunched together in the middle of the stage. They are all separated strategically to provide space. So remember, your frequencies need space and each instrument needs its own position in the track. Either left, right, front or back. Stay posted… In the next post, we will go over how to achieve space with EQ and how to position instruments in your beat maker from left to right and front to back using reverb, delay and panning techniques.
